Fazia tempo que eu não topava com um projeto de tricô tão mágico.
It’s been a while since the last time I stumbled upon such a whimsical knitting project.
A artista é Christien Meindertsma, já fez parte do projeto holandês Droog Design (que, aliás, acabou de abrir uma loja em NYC). Ela vive em Rotterdam e seu trabalho é extremamente conceitual. Pode ir da fotografia (como no “Checked Luggage”, onde ela fez um inventário fotográfico de milhares itens deixados em um aeroporto na Holanda) até seu último trabalho: “Pig”. Neste, ela dissecou um porco, analisando, estudando e registrando o que é feito com um porquinho depois que ele é abatido. E aí descobriu que ele é usado em milhares de diferentes produtos. Aqui tem uma matéria, em inglês, na revista italiana Pig (!), com uma entrevista com ela falando deste projeto.
The artist is Christien Meindertsma, who’s already been with Droog Design. She lives in Rotterdam and her work is very conceptual – it goes from photographing thousands of items left at an airport in the Netherlands (a work called ‘Checked Baggage’) to studying a pig with its hundreds of elements and document what they become after the pig is not an animal anymore but a product.
An extract from the Pig (!) Magazine article on this pig piece (check it out, it has an interview and a lot about her work):
“After slaughter, bits and pieces of the Dutch pig travel around the world. Gelatin from its skin ends up in liquorices and gums, and even cheesecake and tiramisu. In the weapon industry the gelatin is used as conductor for bullets. Pork fat is one of the ingredients of, amongst others, anti-wrinkle cream and shampoo, information that producers are not too keen on admitting. The glue made from pig bones makes matches sturdier and porcelain is manufactured from its ashes. Protein from pig’s hair contributes to making bread soft. Every part of a pig is either eaten or processed. Should anything be left over, it is converted into green electric power. She documented her findings in the book PIG 05049.”
O que eu amei no trabalho dela foi o projeto SHEEP (site aqui). Ela fez uma imersão completa no universo das ovelhas até elas se tornarem lã (ainda bem que, aqui, não há mortes como no caso dos porcos). O mais incrível foi que ela viajou até um lugar mega remoto chamado Kyrgyzstan onde ela foi conhecer e buscar um tipo especial de lã, chamada “felted” em inglês – aqui no Brasil não tem. A palavra “felt” é a que dá origem a “feltro. Então, é um tipo de lã onde existe um processo pós-fabricação da lã em que ela é como que enroladinha, formando um efeito parecido com o do feltro.
What I really fell in love with is actually her project on SHEEP (website here). She did a fantastic immersion in the way a sheep is sheared and in the whole process involving the fabrication of yarns and knitting. She took a trip to the middle of nowhere – a place called Kyrgyzstan as you can check in her own words below.

“On my quest to find new and interesting ways to experiment with wool and ways of making yarn, I discovered Kyrgyzstan. Landlocked and mountainous, it borders Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the southeast. Wool is one of the mayor commodities and it has a very old and rich felting culture which is still very much alive today. It was here that I found craftsmen to work with on making a high quality felted yarn, during my last visit we developed one perfect for knitting a pouf.”
